What is mindful eating?
NON-JUDGMENT
Not judging yourself and the experience of eating.
Meditation practice
The core concept of meditation is being present, therefore, eating mindfully is a form of meditation.
Mindful eating is being in absolute presence in your body, with your food, savoring each moment of the experience.
GRATITUDE
Feeling and giving gratitude for your nourishment and your ability to experience food.
It is being aware of your sensory experiences while eating
- sight, smell, hearing, taste, touch, & proprioception.
“This is so squishy and fluffy!!! It’s like a pillow.”
Eating foods that are nourishing.
HONOR
Honoring your body, the food,
and the experience.
TUNING IN
Listening to your body and what it needs - what food and how much.
It is eating without distractions.
No watching, reading, or working.

How do you eat mindfully?
Become aware of your body, its sensations, and your surroundings. Here is a guided meditation to drop into your body.
Notice how you feel. Are you cold? Hot? Just right? Are you tired? Excited?
What is your intention? Hunger? Stress? Nourishment? Boredom? Curiosity? Sadness? Exploration? Distraction?
Give gratitude and honor to your body, to the food you are about to eat, and your ability to eat.
To whomever prepared your food. To the time and energy it took to grow and create. To those who cared for the produce and the animals. To those who packaged and transported the food. To the market you bought it from. To the sun and water so that the food could grow. To the animal. There are many factors that go into getting the food in front of you, and taking the time to be aware of these makes the experience of eating more meaningful.
Notice the colors, shapes, & textures.
How and what does it smell like?
What are you hearing?
What flavors do you taste?
How does it feel?
What sensations are you experiencing?
Mindful eating is not possible while multi-tasking. Although you can eat mindfully while enjoying the company of others, as long as you are present with your food and your senses.
TUNE IN TO YOUR BODY
Give your body the nourishment it needs. Be aware of your hunger and fullness. Maybe you are only dehydrated. Listen to your intuition. Everyone’s body is different, learn what your body needs, likes, and dislikes. This may also change over time.
ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE HUMAN
Observe without judgment. Be kind to yourself. You don’t have to eat mindfully every meal. Let go of perfectionism. It’s okay to just want to enjoy food - have ice cream, have cake, have chips. And if you do so, don’t shame yourself for it.
Don’t forget to notice the little (big) things.
